All of the CDW school community has been busy helping with the annual
Pennies for Patients fundraiser. The program is run by the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society, and the money raised helps to promote blood cancer
research and support services for patients and their families. Leukemia is
the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15. Great progress
has been made but thousands of children still pass away each year. Here at
in our elementary school district, we have had students and staff members
whose children have been afflicted with this terrible disease. This is the
third year that the middle school has participated in the national three
week effort, and in the past two years we have been one of the top
fundraisers in the state. Each homeroom had a bucket that students could
drop their spare change into. The amounts collected each day were tallied -
at the end of the three week period the two homerooms that raised the most
were treated to a pizza or ice cream party. During the second week of the
collection, the homeroom that raised the most was able to pick the tie that
Principal Rossi would wear all day. The winning homeroom was Mrs. Wynn's and
they selected a bright yellow SpongeBob tie. The last week of the event was
capped off by a Pie throwing contest. Students were able to purchase chances
for $1.00 and twenty names were selected at an assembly during the last
period on Friday. Those students chosen were each given a chance to throw a
pie at the teachers who volunteered and were in the gym. A messy, gooey, fun
time was had by all and more than $4000.00 was raised for the charity.
Thanks to all who participated and helped with the effort, Congratulations
to Mr. Bambach and Mrs. Wynn's homerooms which raised the most money.
